We are
located 40 miles west of Indianapolis near Roachdale,
Indiana. On our farm we
specialize in Dorpers, percentage Dorper/St. Croix and Working Border Collies.
Lisa has been training and trialing Border collies since 1989. They
were our first exposure to the St Croix breed.
The St. Croix breed
posses many desirable traits but it was taking 9 months to 1 year to get them
ready for market. In 2003 we
introduced Dorpers into the flock and were
extremely impressed with the results.
Our weaning weights dramatically increased along with decreasing the
time it took us to get the lambs to market weight. We are currently in the process of
incorporating more purebred Dorper ewes and
percentage Dorper ewes into the flock and cutting
back on the number of St. Croix we have.
The Dorper breed was developed in South Africa
in the 1930’s and 1940’s using Horned Dorset and Blackheaded
Persian Sheep. They were developed to
produce top carcass characteristics and to thrive under harsh
conditions. The coat is a mixture of hair
and short wool, which is shed in the spring.
Mature rams weigh between 225 and 275 pounds. The first Dorpers
were introduced into the North America in
1995. They are now being successfully
raised in all areas of the United States,
Canada and Mexico.
